Unit
1: Parallel Lines
This unit begins with a familiar theme from fist semester;
Parallel Lines. It looks at relationships of various angles to
determine IF the lines are parallel. While looking at these familiar items in a new way, we will
introduce a new concept of proof. From these investigations, prior knowledge in Algebra will
allow students to use a deductive process of
"proving" something based upon established prior facts. |

Unit 2: Proving
Congruence
Students will begin the work
of establishing logical reasoning and argumentation, which will lead
to developing proofs of geometric concepts.
We begin
by using our understanding of congruence, and simply learn to
"formalize" our explanation of what it means to be congruent
by learning to write formal two-column proofs. |

3: Quadrilaterals- Students apply what they've learned about triangles to develop properties of
parallelograms, trapezoids, and kites. They continue to develop their mathematical
reasoning abilities and their algebraic skills by continuing to write two-column proofs
and learning how to do coordinate proofs. |

Unit
4: Similarity - When items are reflected, rotated, or translated, they retain their shape and
size, but with enlargement or reduction they retain only their shape. This idea is the
focus of the beginning investigations in this unit, which leads to the development of the
concept of Similarity. Students will apply this concept to make indirect measurements,
study proportional relationships in triangles and compare these relationships to
perimeters, areas, and volumes. |

Unit
5: Pythagorean Theorem Revisited & Proved- This unit begins with investigations that use knowledge
about Right Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem. It then looks at the 3 main
trigonometric ratios - Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. Using these ratios, student will find
indirect measurements of unknown distances. |

6:
Circles- Chords, Secants, Tangents
After classifying the components of a circle like Radii, Arcs, central
Angles, etc. the students will investigate what the properties of Chords
and Tangents of a circle are. They will develop these concepts along
with concepts relating to lengths of segments and angle measures in a
circle. |

Unit 7:
Polyhedra & Volumes of Solids
Students will build on their understanding of area and
measurement in a plane. They will learn to recognize
various figures in 3-D and be able to build the "net"
figures for each. Helping them to "SEE in 3-D" will be
work with Isometric and Orthographic Drawings of three
dimensional objects. From their visual understanding of
these figures, they will learn to recognize common space
figures like prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and
spheres and compute their surface area and volumes. |
