HEALTH SCIENCE

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: None

Health Science presents a thorough study of modern people, major mental and physical health problems, and means for their control and/or prevention. Topics include infectious and chronic diseases, CPR/First aid, sex education, nutrition/fitness, mental health, and substance abuse. Students will also receive instruction in developing good study skills.

 

FRESHMAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade Level: 9

Prerequisite: None

Freshman P.E. is designed for freshman students to introduce them to physical education at the high school level. Students are required to take two semesters of freshmen PE and will rotate through 3 six-week groups each semester. During the freshman year the students will be exposed to different activities, which include the following: weight training, basketball, wrestling, racquetball, swimming, softball, soccer, track & field. Students will also participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

BADMINTON

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Badminton is offered to students interested in acquiring skills in an exciting lifetime sport. The course will offer the basic skills and knowledge to perform the activity at a novice level. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

ADVANCED BASEBALL/WEIGHT TRAINING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Baseball is a course designed to teach students advanced techniques of baseball, to include hitting, pitching, fielding and strategy that are at an interscholastic level of play. Weight training, plyometrics, conditioning, and flexibility will all be involved.

 

BEGINNING BASKETBALL

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Beginning Basketball is a course designed to improve elementary skills, fundamentals and techniques. Students who successfully complete this class should be able to compete at an intermediate level of play. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED BASKETBALL

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Intermediate Basketball is a course designed for those students who wish to play at a high intramural level of play. Individual and team fundamentals are emphasized at this level. Students will also participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

ADVANCED BASKETBALL/WEIGHT TRIANING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Advanced Basketball is a course designed to emphasize skills and techniques that are at an interscholastic level of play. Weight training, plyometrics, conditioning, and flexibility will all be involved in this course selection.

 

FLAG FOOTBALL (Fall semester only)

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Flag Football is an introductory course that will include rules, fundamental offensive and defensive formations, basis plays and strategies without physical contact. Students will participate in a variety of tournaments and variations of the game. Students will participate in physical fitness activities and testing.

 

BEGINNING RACQUETBALL

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Beginning Racquetball is a course in which students are taught the fundamental skills of three-wall racquetball, including the serve, forehand shots, backhand shots, and two- and three-wall shots, as well as rules, court position, and simple game strategies. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

SOCCER

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Soccer is a course in which students are taught and practice a wide variety of soccer skills including trapping, kicking, passing, heading, dribbling, and goal keeping. Students are also taught game rules and game strategy. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

BEGINNING SWIMMING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Beginning Swimming is specifically designed to attract all students who have not learned the basic skills required to swim and enjoy the benefits of water activities and conditioning. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun activities.

 

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED SWIMMING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Intermediate and advanced swimming is designed to give those with an advanced beginner skill level an opportunity to develop more advanced levels of swimming through stroke knowledge and improvement in style and performance. It is also designed to increase endurance and diving capabilities. Emphasis will be on the four competitive strokes, turns and starts.

 

WATER POLO

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Swimming Skills

Water Polo is designed for intermediate and advanced level players. Previous experience is helpful but not necessary. Passing and shooting skills, offense and defense will be taught.

 

BEGINNING TENNIS

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Beginning Tennis is a course in which students are taught forehand and backhand drives, volleys, and the serve. Students are also taught the rules, etiquette, and beginning strategy of tennis. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game activities.

 

BEGINNING VOLLEYBALL

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Beginning Volleyball is a course in which students are taught and practice the three basic skills of volleyball: bump, set, and serve. The rules and strategy of the game are also covered. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and lots of fun game variations.

 

INTERMEDIATE/ ADVANCED VOLLEYBALL

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Beginning Volleyball

Intermediate/Advanced Volleyball is a course in which students practice the basic skills of volleyball: serve, bump, set and the spike. Students are introduced to, and practice some advanced offensive and defensive techniques. These would include a variety of serves, serve receive techniques, advanced setting, quick attack spiking, off speed hitting and digging. Advanced strategies of the game are also covered. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun game variations.

 

WEIGHT TRAINING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: None

Weight Training is a course in which students are involved in the isotonic type of weight training, running, plyometrics, stretching, and cross training. The isotonic weight lifting will be performed both on the universal weight machine and free weights. Students will participate in fitness activities, testing, and a variety of fun activities.

 

ADVANCED FOOTBALL/ WEIGHT TRAINING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Advanced Football is designed to further the development of fundamental football skills. The following activities will be included: advanced weight training, plyometrics, advanced football strategies, plays and rules of the game. Physical fitness is stressed with testing in weight training, running, push-ups, sit-ups, and agility.

 

ADVANCED WRESTLING/ WEIGHT TRAINING

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation

Advanced Wrestling/ Weight Training is designed to further a beginning wrestler’s skill level and physical strength to a much higher level. Major emphasis will be placed on the various techniques used in wrestling, as well as a higher degree of intensity when weight training. More intensive running will be included involving a higher degree of aerobic and anaerobic fitness.

 

OFF CAMPUS INDEPENDENT STUDY/P.E.

Grade Level: 10-12

Admission to the program is made through an extensive written application process during the semester prior to enrollment. Admission and other program deadlines must be adhered to.

O.C.I.S./Physical Education is available to students who are participating in an approved preparation program for national amateur competition in swimming, ice skating, gymnastics, tennis or dance. Students must be practicing at least 15 hours a week under the direct supervision of a certified coach and must be participating in regional, state, or national competition during the semester of enrollment. Hours of participation in Poway High School’s athletic program cannot be used toward the O.C.I.S. PE program.
