Students who participate in the arts do better in
school! Garden Road Elementary School is
fortunate to have a PTA sponsored art program led by
Mrs. Jean Snow. Mrs. Snow regularly meets with
classrooms to incorporate an art curriculum into our
students' academic programs. While students
are encouraged to explore their creativity in the
classroom, additional creative arts contests and
activities are often available through various
sponsors. Review the current opportunities
listed below and encourage your child to participate
in these creative arts endeavors!

YMCA/SDG&E Character Development Essay or Poster
Contest
The YMCA of San Diego County and San Diego Gas &
Electric are hosting a school essay or poster
contest in celebration of Character Development in
San Diego County during the month of October.
Students are asked to write or draw about one of the
YMCA values of Caring, Honesty, Respect or
Responsibility. County wide elementary school contest
winners in each grade level will receive two Sea World tickets.

Please submit your entry to the school office,
attention Jean Snow, no later than October 29 in
order to meet Garden Road's internal contest
deadline and be eligible for the County
contest.
15th Annual Safe & Wise Water Ways Poster
Contest
The California Department of Boating and Waterways is
hosting it's 15th Annual Safe & Wise Water Ways Poster Contest.
Winners will be selected to appear on the Department's 2008 boating and
aquatic safety calendar, and earn an educational savings bond along with
additional prizes. This year the Department is highlighting the
following four boating and aquatic safety themes:
1. Learn to rescue safely
2. Alcohol, drugs and
boating don't mix
3. Learn to float
4. Wear a life jacket

rules and guidelines. Please follow the submission guidelines for
information to include on the back of your entry, and submit your poster
to the school office, attention Jean Snow, by November 5 so that Mrs.
Snow can compile the entries, complete the required contest entry form
and submit them on behalf of Garden Road by the contest's deadline.
