About Our School

"Make it a great day or not, the choice is yours" resounds every morning through the classrooms and walkways of Canyon View Elementary School.  Character Counts and Project Wisdom, character education programs that emphasize making good choices, help set the tone for our school day.  We believe in choice and ours is to make Canyon View the place where all our students are educated to be lifelong learners who reach their potential as productive members of our society.

Located in Rancho de los Penasquitos, a community of San Diego approximately 20 minutes north of downtown, Canyon View School services students in grades K through 5.  The school opened in 1987 to meet the needs of an ever-increasing community of single family homes and apartment complexes.  With 572 students, maximum class size in grades K-3 is twenty students.  Fourth and fifth grades currently average 31 students per class.  We are also home to a Special Day class.

Canyon View has a strong reputation as a nurturing yet challenging community dedicated to the education of our children.  Families from a variety of ethnic backgrounds make up this community.  Our English Language Learners program services 87 students who represent 18 ethnicities and speak 26 different languages.  Our goal is to assist these students in becoming fully proficient in English as they participate in academic activities.  Our diverse background and cultural heritage add to the richness of our learning environment and strengthen our day to day curriculum.

Students receive instruction and participate in learning activities in a variety of curriculum and subject areas. There is an emphasis at all grade levels on development of literacy, communication, math computation and problem solving. We strive to meet the needs of each child through the collaborative efforts of parents, teachers, support staff and students. There are no invisible children at Canyon View. Our belief in reaching all our children at all levels and in all areas is apparent through our SOAR and Dragon Reading programs, computer-based ALEKS mathematics program, Criterion computer-based writing program and our two Reading Specialists, Counselor and Student Specialist.

The Canyon View staff is the heart and soul of the school. Students walking onto campus feel the energy and enthusiasm that supports their well-being and their success in all academic endeavors. Our staff is composed of teachers with diverse interests that benefit our students with a wide variety of teaching experiences.

Extended Student Services (ESS) provides on site childcare from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. for approximately 155 students. Communication and collaboration thrives at Canyon View. Teacher and PTA newsletters, a Canyon View website, teacher websites, a student generated newspaper, e-mail, Connect-Ed mass communication telephone system and our marquee represent the partnership that exists between parents, teachers and students.

The Parent Teacher Association's members log more than 10,000 volunteer hours per year. The non-profit Canyon View Elementary School Foundation and the PTA raise tens of thousands of dollars annually to augment the school's instructional programs. Our business partnerships continue to grow as we expand our capacity to provide a real world education.

Inviting our military families to share in our Veteran’s Day Friday Flag ceremony and honoring them through a medley of songs representing each of the branches exemplifies that we are more than a learning institution. We are a vibrant learning community whose energy permeates all we do with an abundance of positive opportunities for all students. Learning doesn’t happen in isolation, but as a result of all stakeholders working together holding one vision – the education of all our students!
