BACKGROUND:
Gateway,
which manufactures products and solutions for business, education and
government, is a a member of the High School to High Tech Council.
The Council maximizes an existing window of opportunity where the
business community is aware that it needs public education to produce a
competent future workforce, especially as it relates to technology.
The Gateway Project was developed out of this Council. The program
provides students with an opportunity to achieve certification in a high
demand field while still in high school. In addition to two
semesters of classroom study, students will be required to participate in
a hands-on internship during this course to qualify them as
"work-ready" candidates upon completion. The Gateway
Project is the first of it's kinds for the District and Gateway Business.
Students will begin the course during their junior year. Both
semesters of the junior year will be spent in classroom study.
During their senior year, students will participate in internships,
learning hands-on application of the coursework. The internship
component will also include coursework in employment competencies based
on the National skill requirements, known as SCANS (Secretary's
Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills). Students will be placed
in internship positions at several locations, including Gateway
facilities when possible. In addition to positions within the PUSD,
locations may include local businesses with Information Systems
departments.
