New Homework Policy Focuses on Ways to Increase Student Learning

After two years of conducting research and meeting with teachers, administrators, parents, and students, PUSD has a new homework policy which focuses on ways to increase student learning. Central to the policy is the focus on student opportunities for reading, applying writing skills, and practicing previously taught math skills. Our policy emphasizes that homework serves to develop regular study skills and the ability to complete assignments independently.

Superintendent's Message

After Almost 30 Years of Steady Enrollment Growth, PUSD Sees Drop in Enrollment

.

Declining K-12 enrollment has been taking place for some time in many districts across the state. Poway Unified is one of the last districts in San Diego County not to be in decline, due in large part to the desirability of our schools and the overall quality of life in our many wonderful neighborhoods.

Poway Unified Superintendent Don Phillips, Ed.D., with Citizens Oversight Committee Chair Kathy Frost, and PUSD Board members, Andy Patapow, president, and Penny Ranftle, vice president, accepted the award on behalf of the school district at the May 18, 2005 annual San Diego County Taxpayers Association Golden Watchdog and Golden Fleece Awards dinner in San Diego.

Everyone Reaching Out with Books for Mississippi School Libraries Destroyed in Hurricane
Library staffs are leading the way in helping children whose library collections have been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Lynn Grindstaff, library media technician at Painted Rock Elementary School said that the school district has collected more than 9,000 books so far. Donations will be accepted at school sites and at PUSD, and shipped free of charge through Allied Van Lines Atlas Transfer in Poway. Monetary donations from Sony and others will pay for expenses and used for book vouchers for the Harrison County School District in Mississippi.

Looking Toward the Future - College

Preparing students to be successful in college and in the business world begins with preschool and extends throughout one’s lifetime. The links in this section access websites that give not only college information, but tips for parents of elementary students as well. Learning about all the options available for students today can help in planning for the future. Beginning to plan early can make all the difference.

College preparatory coursework, known as a-g requirements, are prerequisites for admission to colleges and universities including the University of California and California State University systems. Having more students meet the rigorous a-g requirements and be successful in college is a major goal for Poway Unified. Students need to acquire the critical skills needed to do college work during high school through taking advantage of college prep coursework.
