Factors Affecting College Admission
  • High school grade point average in a-g courses.
  • Standardized test scores.
  • Number, content, and performance in academic courses beyond the minimum eligibility requirements.
  • Number of and performance in honors and AP courses.
  • Quality of the senior year program, as measured by the type and number of academic courses in progress or planned.
  • Quality of academic performance relative to educational opportunities available in the applicant’s school.
  • Recent marked improvement in academic performance.
  • Special talents, achievements, and awards.
  • Academic accomplishments in light of an applicant’s life experiences and special circumstances, such as disabilities, low family income, first generation to attend college, need to work, disadvantaged social or educational environment, difficult personal and family situations.

Admission Requirements
  • Admissions: You must have a high school diploma, pass the GED or the California High School Proficiency Exam, or be 18 years old
  • What college can you attend? California has over 108 community colleges.  You can attend a community college anywhere in California
  • Test Requirements: Placement test/Orientation will be given prior to registering for classes.
  • Grade Requirements: No specific grade point average is required for admission.
  • Costs-- Enrollment fee per unit: $26;  Parking permit by semester: $35 per term; Health Fee: $13; Student Center fee: $1/unit; Audit fee: $15/unit
  • Additional costs: Attending a community college will involve books (approx. $100-150 per class) and transportation since many students continue to live at home.

  • Mission: To provide undergraduate and graduate instruction through the master’s degree in liberal arts and sciences and professional education, including teacher education.
  • Curriculum:  Undergraduate programs are designed to provide a combination of theory and application necessary for graduate work or employment in one’s chosen field of study.
  • Admission:  Top 33% of graduating class.  No comprehensive review.
  • Eligibility: Must have a qualifiable eligibility index score.
  • Examination requirement: The new SAT or ACT
  • Costs: fees of $2,334, Room and board: $7, 790

  • Mission: To provide undergraduate and graduate instruction through the doctoral degree with emphasis on research and professional education.
  • Curriculum: Undergraduate programs are designed to prepare students for graduate and professional work.  Curriculum emphasizes theory and profession preparation.
  • Admission:  Top 12% of graduating class.  Comprehensive review.
  • Eligibility: Statewide context (eligibility index score), local context, or by examination alone.
  • Examination Requirement: The new SAT or ACT with writing and any two SAT II subject tests.
  • Costs: Fees of $6,260, room & board of $10,400

  • What is the Advanced Placement (AP) Program?
  • It is a program of college-level course and exams for secondary school students.
  • What is an AP course like?
  • It is a special college-level learning experience that most often takes a full academic year.
  • What are the advantages of taking AP courses?
  • Exemption by your college or university from beginning courses and permission to take higher level course in certain fields.
  • Academic credit awarded for exams taken.
  • Tuition saving up to a year of credit may be given for three or more qualifying AP grades.
  • Time to explore undergraduate subject areas that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to study.
  • Eligibility for honors and other special programs open to students who have received AP recognition.
