A comprehensive look at EMHI/PIP Programs:
EMHI/PIP has been expanded to include
several components: Activity Room, Small Group, Classroom Lessons, and
Playground.
Kindergarten-third grade students are
invited to attend Activity Room or Small Group sessions after input from the
teacher, parent, and elementary counselor. In each of these selections,
the student spends approximately 30 minutes-per-week for 12-15 weeks at a
time selected by the teacher.
Students accepted in the program meet
with a Student Services Assistant in a specially equipped activity room or
small group room. The Student Services Assistant offers a supportive and
non-judgmental relationship. This, in turn, fosters positive
self-esteem, confidence, and an enhanced sense of school
belonging. Students return to their classrooms relaxed and ready to
focus on learning.
The small group sessions offer two
curricula: Second Step and Stages. Second Step
helps students gain
skills to increase empathy, aid in problem-solving, and manage feelings.
Stages helps to increase the coping skills of students who are going through a
transition such as moving, loss, family illness, or perhaps a new baby.
These small groups, usually 3-4 students, are led by a Student Services
Assistant who meets weekly with a credentialed school counselor for supervision and instruction
.
EMHI/PIP grants offer classroom lessons at
some of the schools. The Student
Services Assistants and Specialists are also on the playground during recess
and lunch to assist students in using problem-solving skills.
In California, EMHI/PIP programs have been
funded since 1992 throughout the State. Evaluation has shown
significant levels of improvement in school adjustment by
students who participate in PIP.
