The Foundation Center is an independent, nonprofit, information clearinghouse established in 1956. The Center’s mission is to foster public understanding of the foundation field by collecting, organizing, analyzing, and disseminating information on foundation, corporate giving, and related subjects. The Center’s resources are useful to grant seekers, grant makers, researchers, policy makers, and the general public.

InkALCOA FOUNDATION

DESCRIPTION: Supports preschool and K-12 initiatives and improving classroom resources; math and science curriculum; and staff development

DEADLINE: None. The company reviews proposals every month. Send letters of inquiry, along with proposals (do not send these separately). All funding requests must be made in writing. No requests will be evaluated over the phone.

TIP: Focus proposals on a specific program; they will not select from a menu of needs.

CIRCUIT CITY FOUNDATION

DESCRIPTION:: Supports K-12 education projects on public school reform.

DEADLINE: September 1 and March 1. The Board meets in October and April to decide on grants.

FUNDS: The foundation distributes about $1 million annually in grants. Grants average $250 to $750.

ELIGIBILITY: Public schools and school districts in communities where Circuit City stores are located.

GAP, INC.

DESCRIPTION:: To provide a positive impact on the future in areas where the company does business. Contributions are made in the areas of health and human services, education, arts and culture and the environment.

FUNDS: Amounts vary. Community Relations also makes contributions of T-shirts, sweatshirts, and gift certificates to support organizations that fit program interests of Community Relations.

HELLER CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

DESCRIPTION:: The Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation supports programs that challenge students academically, especially economically disadvantaged elementary and secondary students, and that develop the professional skills of teachers.

FUNDS: $5,000 to $450,000. Applicants must request a specific amount. This foundation only funds California projects.

DEADLINE: March 15, July 25 and November 15

INTEL FOUNDATION

DESCRIPTION:: Intel funds programs to advance science, math, and engineering education and promotes initiatives to encourage women to enter these professions.

DEADLINE: None

FUNDS: More than $96 million was awarded in 1997 to schools, colleges, and universities and community organizations.

AREAS: The foundation makes two types of grants. National grants that assist programs in the content areas listed above to serve a pilot program for a national outreach effort. Community grants that support programs in specific communities in states where Intel has facilities. (This includes California)

RITE AID

DESCRIPTION: Rite Aid offers grants to schools in the following areas: health and medical, social services, education, the arts and civic services. Funding amounts vary.

TOSHIBA
